Botanical Monograph & Clinical Profile

Black pepper is the dried fruit of Piper nigrum, known in Ayurveda as Maricha and in Hindi as kali mirch. It is one of the most widely used culinary spices and a classical Kapha-Vata pacifying dravya: katu (pungent), laghu (light), tikshna (sharp) and ushna (heating). In traditional practice a pinch is used to stimulate digestion (dipana-pachana), reduce Ama and help clear sticky Kapha from the channels. Household uses include a pinch with honey for productive cough, and teas or decoctions with ginger and tulsi for seasonal congestion. It is also a component of Trikatu, the classical three-pungent combination of black pepper, long pepper and dry ginger. Culinary amounts in food are the usual starting point; concentrated powders and extracts should be used only with professional guidance.
